This course will open your eyes to the extensive collection of bikeways that exist all around you -- our network of public streets, roads and paths. You will learn effective strategies for bicycling with motorists and gain the confidence to ride anywhere you want.

Are you someone who often thinks, “I’d love to ride my bike, but the roads are just too scary.” Perhaps you want to run a few errands by bike. Or just get some exercise. You can! A recent CyclingSavvy student who was a novice bicyclist said this after taking the course:

“Most of my adult life I worked in the field of exercise. I taught weight training, yoga, aerobic dance, individual exercise programs, and was the Director of Recreation at a Correctional facility. I have taken over five hundred classes and I must say this course was done so well that I feel confident biking and it also made me a better driver. I would recommend this course to anyone. I wish it was part of a school curriculum.” -- Julie Silverman, South Portland, Maine

Or maybe you’re a cyclist who’s been riding for years and you’re open to learning some new strategies. This course is for you, too.

“Typically I ride my road bikes between 9,000 and 12,000 miles each year and I ride them anywhere I want to go in daylight or darkness. I enrolled in the three-part CyclingSavvy course. I learned fundamentals I don’t remember thinking about . . . no wonder I wasn’t very helpful to beginners. Convictions that I held resolutely were challenged and shown to be indefensible. This course is wonderful for timid cyclists and a must for those of us who know it all.” -- Larry Gies, Orlando, Florida

The biggest secret in cycling is that it is actually one of the safest ways to travel. And you can make it even safer -- as well as more enjoyable -- with a handful of savvy strategies. None of this entails riding like Lance Armstrong, or going elbow-to-bumper with cars. It’s just a matter of being able to read traffic patterns, position yourself strategically, and communicate clearly with motorists -- all learnable skills that we’ll teach you in this course from the American Bicycling Education Association. After taking this course and its companion CyclingSavvy Mastery you will have the knowledge -- and the confidence -- to bike in traffic safely. And we daresay you will find yourself having a lot more fun!

Watch our two free previews to get a taste of what's to come in the rest of the course! These two free lessons cover the bicyclist's roadway position law, and the types of crash conflicts common to sidewalk cycling. We hope they'll give you a sense of just how much detail we cover.

About The Instructors

Since 2008, your instructors Keri Caffrey and Mighk Wilson have developed strategies for cyclists that reduce conflicts with motorists, and techniques for teaching critical bike-handling skills in a non-intimidating manner. Their course gives adult and teen bicyclists of all levels new ways of looking at their place in the traffic system, and the confidence to travel wherever they wish by bike. They’ve taught their course to hundreds of cyclists in person with enthusiastic responses, constantly improving it with student feedback, and now they are bringing these strategies and techniques to an online course.

So how will you become a savvy cyclist?

The first section of CyclingSavvy starts out with the story of how our traffic system came to be and why it works so well; the rules of movement which are the foundation for our traffic laws, and the specific laws that apply to cyclists. This is really “getting back to the fundamentals.” Many students have told us this material not only made them better bicyclists, but better motorists, too.

In the second section you’ll learn about the most common types of cyclist crashes (they’re probably not what you think!) and the defensive bicycle driving strategies that will virtually eliminate them. We’ll also show you the best equipment to use to keep you upright and visible.

The techniques in CyclingSavvy provide the foundation for the next course, CyclingSavvy Mastery, where we’ll show you strategies for making cycling much more enjoyable as well. We’ll show you how to “hack” the traffic system (in completely legal and safe ways) so you make things not only easier for yourself, but easier for the motorists around you, too. You’ll learn how to find and navigate good routes to your destinations using paths, quiet local streets, and major roads either with or without bikeways.

Your Instructors

Keri Caffrey

Keri is a technical illustrator and graphic designer with 20 years of urban cycling experience and a passion for teaching.

Through two decades of bicycling in urban Orlando, she experienced the expansion of suburbia with wide, fast roads, the addition of bicycle-specific infrastructure, an increase in traffic and a decrease in civility. Through an examination of her own close calls and conflicts, and observation of the behavior of both cyclists and motorists, she became convinced that the greatest challenge facing the promotion of urban cycling is lack of education, coupled with the destructive belief system Americans have developed about our roads.

To answer this challenge, Keri applied her background in curriculum design, technical illustration and animation to the development of the CyclingSavvy course. CyclingSavvy teaches vital behaviors that empower bicyclists to travel anywhere safely, easily and without fear.

Mighk Wilson

Mighk (pronounced Mike) is a co-founder of the CyclingSavvy program and the American Bicycling Education Association. He has been cycling in traffic routinely ever since he was a kid. He has worked as a bicycle and pedestrian transportation planner for MetroPlan Orlando, a regional transportation planning agency, since 1993. During his years as a bicycle planner, he has done extensive study of the causes of bicyclist crashes, and developed a number of local programs to educate cyclists, as well as non-cyclists, about the safest ways for cyclists and motorists to operate together.
